There are also in this Colony several

tanneries conducted in accordance with Chinese methods, but the leather produced by them is of such an inferior quality that it is unsaleable outside China.

At the present time there are large

qumptities of sundried hides in Hongkong bought by Chinese when prines were high which cannot now be sold at anything like their purchase price, and the fact that most countries require some guarantee that hides are from healthy animals adds to the difficulty of finding a market.

I am, Sir,

Your obedient servant,

(Sd.) M. Fletcher

Colonial Eecretary.
